It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Charlie
Goodwin, who went home to be with the lord on February 20, 2024. Charlie
was a remarkable individual whose presence touched the lives of many. He
will forever be remembered for his kindness, compassion, and witty sense
of humor.
Born on December 29, 1939 in Norfolk, VA. Charlie was a true force of
nature. Throughout his life, he approached every day with enthusiasm that
inspired those around him. With a genuine smile and a warm heart, Charlie
had an incredible ability to make everyone feel valued and loved. He
possessed an unwavering dedication to his family, faith, friends, and
community, leaving an indelible mark on the lives he encountered.
Charlie's passion for all things water related was evident in everything he
did. Whether he was immersed in the maritime museum, exploring the
great outdoors, or engaging in community service, his boundless energy
and zest for life were a testament to his adventurous spirit.
Charlie joined the military in 1957 and was discharged in 1969 and then
served in the Civil Service until he reenlisted in 1981 and later retired in
1990. He also served the lord and his community as a senior deacon,
Sunday school teacher and the local assistant fire chief. Beyond his
individual achievements, Charlie was a pillar of strength and support for his
loved ones. As a devoted partner, loving parent, and cherished friend, he
touched countless lives with his unwavering love, humor, guidance, and
wisdom. His unwavering loyalty and willingness to lend a helping hand
created a sense of unity and belonging wherever he went.
Charlie's memory will forever live on in the hearts of his beloved family. He
was predeceased by his loving parents Joseph M and Adelaide Goodwin,
his eldest daughter Brenda J Orth and his grandson Jacob Cahoon. He is
survived by his loving wife of 37 years Katherine H. Goodwin, his daughters,
Tracey Woods of Savannah, GA, Heather Lingle (Chad) of Stephenville,
TX, Rhonda Mason (Clarence Wayne) and his son Joshua Cahoon
(Lauren) of Beaufort, NC. His grandchildren Christopher Watson (Jennifer),
Joshua Knepper, Jonathan Orth, Sara Woods, Laura Fordham (Joseph),
Nick Mason (Amberleigh Davis), Maddison Mason (Tyler Hamilton), Sabrina Guthrie (TJ), Joshua Cahoon (Elizabeth Morris),
Austin Cahoon, 12 great grandchildren, his best friend Ben Lopedote
(Wendy) as well as many other family members and dear friends.
Their immeasurable loss is shared by all those who had the privilege of
knowing Charlie, as his absence will be deeply felt.
We invite everyone who knew Charlie to join us as we honor and pay
tribute to a truly remarkable individual. In celebration of Charlie's life, his
funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, February 23, 2024 at
Edwards Chapel in South River with Pastor David Hansley officiating. Burial will follow
at Bayview Cemetery in Morehead City with Military Honors and Masonic Rites.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM on Friday at the church.
This will provide an opportunity for friends, family, and loved ones to gather,
share stories, and support each other during this difficult time. As we say goodbye
to Charlie, let us remember the joy he brought to our lives. May his legacy inspire
us to live each day with the same vibrancy, compassion and humor that he embodied.
Rest in peace, dear Charlie, knowing that your impact on this world will
forever be cherished and remembered.
