Alice Lewis

November 28, 1944 — February 22, 2025

Gloucester

Alice Mae Chadwick Lewis, 80, of Gloucester, NC, peacefully passed away on Saturday, February 22, 2025, surrounded by her loving family at Carolina East Medical Center in New Bern, NC.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, February 28, 2025, at Marshallberg Missionary Baptist Church, with burial to follow at Victoria Cemetery in Marshallberg. The family will receive friends at the church on Thursday evening, February 27, 2025, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

Alice was born in New London, Connecticut, on November 28, 1944, and raised in Straits, North Carolina. As a young girl, she found her place in the world on the ballfield where her competitive spirit and natural athleticism rendered her a force to be reckoned with, and a force she would remain throughout her life. A 1963 graduate of Smyrna High School, Alice excelled in athletics and leadership, participating in basketball, various clubs, and committees. After high school, she extended her athletic abilities beyond the court, participating in softball, bowling, and tennis. Her love for sports extended beyond playing—she spent many years coaching, inspiring countless young athletes, including her four daughters. Her daughters fondly recall how they had to retire from playing softball so she would quit. Few grandchildren can say they had the joy of watching their grandmother shine on the field, a testament to her enduring passion.

Beyond athletics, Alice was a devoted public servant. She retired as a Teacher’s Assistant and School Bus Driver, working in several Carteret County schools, with the majority of her years spent at Beaufort Elementary. She touched the lives of many students, leaving a lasting impact on those she taught, mentored, and transported over the years.

Anything Alice decided she wanted to do, she did it. She had many gifts, and her grandchildren grew up convinced there wasn’t a single thing Grandma couldn't do. Whether it was cake decorating, sewing, clamming, rocking babies, feeding babies, or cooking Sunday dinner, she got it done—and she did it well.

A woman of great faith, Alice was a devoted member of Marshallberg Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as Sunday School teacher, VBS worker, and a member on various committees over the years. Her faith was the foundation of her life, and she lived it through service to others.

Above all, Alice was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Her family was her greatest pride and joy. She never missed an opportunity to support her loved ones—whether attending a sporting event, speech contest, graduation, play, or simply watching them play outside. Her love, guidance, and unwavering support will be cherished forever.

Alice is survived and severely missed by those she cherished and nurtured: her husband, Roland E. Lewis, of 61 years; her four daughters, Rolanda Golden (Sonny) of Bettie, Terrena Foley (Kevin) of Gloucester, Stephanie Goodwin (Henry) of Sea Level, and Monica Grady (Randy) of Harkers Island; eight grandchildren Devan Foley (Mary Beth), Brittany Beacham (Michael), Alexandria Roberts (Dusty), Sarah Kittrell (Miller), Harrison Goodwin, Hailey Grady, Patrick Grady (Peyton), and Dade Grady; and those of whom brought her the greatest joy, her great-grandchildren, Jaelyn, Finley, Harper, and Elias Beacham, and Ada and Hallie Mae Roberts. She also leaves behind several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph D. and Viola C. Chadwick; two sisters, Mary Ellen Carglile and Marion Barbour; a brother-in-law, Gary Lewis; a sister-in-law, Brenda Newton Lewis; two nieces, Bertha Barbour Lupton and Amy Lewis Barnes; and a nephew, Darren Lewis.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Benevolent Fund at Marshallberg Baptist Church, PO Box 189, Marshallberg, NC 28553.
