April Nolen

April MacDurfee Nolen, 73, of Beaufort, passed away on Friday, November 8, 2024 at ECU Medical Center in Greenville.

April Lee MacDurfee Nolen was born March 3rd, 1951 in Keene, New Hampshire. She was a graduate of East Carteret High School after moving to the south in her teens and returned later in life to finalize her formal education at Carteret Community College with her associate’s degree in paralegal studies.

April began her work life in North Carolina at Cross Creek Apparel in Newport, where she worked until returning to school. She worked as a champion of the children in the foster system as a guardian ad litem, helping many families in the community, and ended her working career with 10 years at the Lowe’s Home Improvement in Morehead City before her retirement. She was an avid reader who also loved handicrafts, sewing for her family, and gardening. She was a member of Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church in North River. Her larger-than-life personality and matching opinions will not be forgotten and blessed her with the companionship of the “golden girls” – including Ada, Sarah, Cindy, Debbie, Katherine, Lubertha, Maria, Michelle, Susan, and the youngest of the golden girls, Allison.

She leaves to cherish her memory: her husband Stacy Nolen; children Robert Nolen and Deshanna Nolen Prieto and partner Robert Prieto; grandchildren and their partners Motisha (Juan) Coleman, Ebony (Javon) Boddie, Paris Nolen (Dequante Lewis), and Tristen Nolen; great-grandchildren Kaden Coleman, Jaden Coleman, Zoe Boddie, Londen Coleman, Kayson Lewis, and Juan Coleman Jr.; her siblings Rhoda Haynes and Jim Hockett; in-laws Emma Murrell, Mary Sue Johnson, Fred Johnson, Marilyn Reels, Douglas Johnson, Philmore Nolen, Jeffrey Nolen, and Thomas Nolen; along with a host of others, nieces, nephews, cousins including Pamela (Timothy) Kellam, Tonya Toodle, Petrena (Daryl) Ford, and Natro Brimmer, and friends; including her dear friends, Marilyn Brown and Susan Prieto.

 A funeral service will be held at 3:00 pm on Thursday, November 14, 2024 at Bridgeway Church of Beaufort. Entombment will follow at the Johnson Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 3:00pm on Thursday at the church.
