Bobby Allen Guthrie Sr.

Obituary Bobby Allen Guthrie, Sr was born on Wednesday, July 30, 1952 to Luther Merrill Guthrie and Vera C Gillikin. He spent many days at their Harkers Island home with his brothers Ted and Craig, often walking to the shore to fish, to mend nets, and to play like Island boys. He was a very smart student at his elementary school, one that could quickly remember historical facts, win spelling bees, and solve math equations. He was the go-to guy for his classmates when it came to math all the way through high school. His school friends remember him as a gentle guy who always laughed at jokes, especially his own, but never got in fights. He graduated from East Carteret High School in 1970 and immediately enlisted in military service. During his time in the Coast Guard, while stationed at Elizabeth City, he witnessed a catastrophe that would affect him in ways he did not realize until much later in life. While serving in the Coast Guard, Bobby married Cheryl Hargraves and saw the birth of his first two children, Bobby Jr. also called Bobby Dink, and Michelle. After four years of military service, Bobby returned to Harkers Island and started working in the commercial fishing industry. For thirty-three years, he enjoyed his work in the commercial fishing industry known as Captain Bobby Dink. Other fishermen felt at home on the boat with him at the helm, as he was a kind and hard-working captain. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM on Saturday, February 20, 2021 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Harkers Island. Two families joined into one at their marriage on October 19, 1979. Bobby immediately chose to be the father he didnt have to be to a son Mikie and a daughter Lynnda who he loved unconditionally for the remainder of his days. The next year the family welcomed a fifth child, Kimberly, and the family home felt complete next door to their beloved Big Ma. Bobby and Annette frequently hosted missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. They enjoyed feeding them and meeting with them, but felt a particularly strong connection with the elders who served them in 1989, Elder Swallow, Elder Geddes, and Elder Diamond. After meeting with the missionaries for years, reading from the Book of Mormon, studying and praying, Bobbys testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ grew and on April 1, 1990 he was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Soon after, the family was sealed for time and eternity in the Washington DC temple on December 27, 1991. Bobby enjoyed travel, visiting Florida, New York, Utah, Myrtle Beach and cross-country road trips. He loved food, especially seafood, the New York Yankees, music and concerts, and seeing his grandchildren play football, baseball, piano, and anything and everything they did. One of his favorite memories was seeing the Yankees play at Yankee Stadium in 2008 with his dear friends Susan and Dave. In his later years, he loved seeing the Platters, Coasters, and Drifters with his dear wife. On June 1, 2003, Bobby experienced his greatest heartbreak with the sudden loss of his eldest son and fellow fisherman, Bobby Dink. This was a life changing moment for Bobby; not a day would go by without a thought of Bobby Dink and a dream of their future reunion. In November of 2007, Bobby suddenly became very ill and was struggling to breathe. He soon learned that a virus and other life events had affected his heart, and the doctors prepared his family that he only had a few months to live. God blessed him with thirteen more years - a time to see the marriage of his youngest daughter and the birth of many more grandchildren and a great-grandson. Those thirteen years, though difficult, were some of the best days he shared with his wife Annette. He continued to grow in the gospel of Jesus Christ, made new friends at the many doctors offices and hospitals he frequented, and traveled to many new places. It was a time also filled with sadness, the loss of his dear cousin Susan, and the loss of the work he loved. His mortal life ended the way he lived it, with his nets full, surrounded by those he loved most on February 15, 2021 at Carteret Health Care. Bobby was preceded in death by his son Bobby Dink, his father and mother, his sister-in-law Mary, his brother-in-law Ken, and his favorite cousin Susan. He is survived by the love of his life, Annette; his daughter Michelle and husband Louis; his son Mikie and wife Heather; his daughter Lynnda; his daughter Kimberly and husband Nate; his grandchildren Justin, Drew, Chelsea, Georgia, Morgan, Owen, Addison and Kaycee; his great grandson Waylon; his brother Ted and wife Nina Jean, his brother Craig, and sister Carol.
