Obituary Charles Edward Garner, 82, of Newport, passed away Sunday, May 13, 2018 at his home surrounded by family. Mr. Garner served in the US Army and retired after 31 years as a woodworking Supervisor with the civil service at Cherry Point. While he worked at Cherry Point, he also delivered the News & Observer for 27 years. After his retirement from Cherry Point, he worked with Oakwood Mobile Homes until 2014. When he wasn't working, you could find him on his riding lawnmower cutting grass, doing whatever was needed around his home, and spending time with his wife and family. Mr. Garner was known as a devoted husband and father, great provider, and a hard worker. He had an easy going personality with a lighthearted spirit and was loved by many. A funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Friday, May 18, 2018 at First Free Will Baptist Church of Beaufort with Pastor Richard Patterson officiating. A private burial will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Park. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sylvia D. Garner of Newport; two sons, Charles L. Garner and wife, Tammy of Newport; Larry E. Garner and companion Shari Dickson of Newport; daughter, Julie Garner Munden and companion Stephen Linton of Newport; and grandson, Larry Earnest Garner of Newport. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Percy and Julia Alvinia Garner; brothers, Ralph Garner and wife Marian; Wilber Garner; Richard Garner; twin infant sisters; sisters, Betty Mae Garner; Ester Raie Garner; Sally Bell; and Frances "Arlene" Garner. The family will receive friends from 10:00am 10:45am on Friday at First Free Will Baptist Church in Beaufort. The family would like to recognize Mandy West-Frazier, RN of Community Home Care and Hospice for her outstanding care, professionalism, and kindness that she delivered to Mr. Garner and his family. Also, the family wishes to thank our friend Barbara Waddell, and caregivers Victoria Currie and Wanda Cooper, for their dedication and hard work in helping Sylvia with the day to day care of Mr. Garner.
