Obituary Elmer Gibbie Sanderson, 81, of Beaufort passed away peacefully, after a long illness, on Monday, January 18, 2021, with his family in Durham, NC. Elmer Gibbie, better known as Gibbie, was born in Beaufort on November 5, 1939, to the late Manly William Sanderson and the late Annie Mae Bowen Sanderson. He retired from the NARF/NADEP at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, where he specialized in aircraft radar. He also served in the US Air Force and retired from the US Coast Guard Reserve. He married Maria Pilar Madrid Sarasa in Zaragoza, Spain, on March 18, 1963. He enjoyed antique cars, photography, bowling, travel, and aviation. He was a member of St. Egberts Catholic Church, Morehead City. Gibbie is survived by his wife, Maria Pilar Sanderson of Beaufort; his son, Carlos Sanderson and wife Hope of Beaufort; his two daughters, Ana Maria Kistler and husband Robert Mark of Durham, NC; and Marta Pilar Sanderson and husband Robert Harrison Gibbs, Jr. of Williamsburg, VA; as well as his grandchildren, David Elmer and William Ferenc Kistler of Durham; Charles Avery and Sara Elizabeth Gibbs of Williamsburg. He was recently preceded in death by his brother, Elisha William Sanderson. A graveside memorial service will be held at 11am on May 1, 2021 at Ocean View Cemetery, Beaufort, NC. He was a loving husband and father and an amazing "Yayo". He will be deeply missed, yet always loved "to the end of the numbers."
