Gilbert Scott Cook Jr., 71, of Stacy, passed away on Monday, March 11, 2024, at Carolina East Medical Center in New Bern, NC.


A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 14, 2024, at Davis First Baptist Church officiated by Pastor David Phelps.


We honor the life and legacy of Gilbert Scott Cook Jr., a man of unwavering faith and courage, who departed this world on March 11, 2024, at the age of 71. Born on October 11, 1952, in St. Louis, Missouri, Gilbert's journey of life came to a peaceful close in New Bern, North Carolina, surrounded by the love and warmth of his family.


Gilbert's life was a testament to his dedication and service. Joining the Army at a young age, he bravely served his country for 20 years, including two tours in Vietnam, where he exemplified the virtues of courage and selflessness. After retiring from military service, he continued to serve his community through his work with the Department of Corrections and the Marine Fisheries Licensing Department. His commitment to making a difference in the lives of others was evident in every aspect of his professional life.


Beyond his professional endeavors, Gilbert was a devoted servant of the Lord. He channeled his deep faith into his calling as a preacher, sharing the gospel and touching countless lives in several churches. His Bachelor of Theology from Andersonville University was not merely an academic achievement but a foundation upon which he built his life's work of guiding others towards the path of spirituality and compassion. Family was the cornerstone of Gilbert's life. He leaves behind a legacy of love and strength for his two sons, Gilbert S. Cook III and his wife Jennifer, of Crouse, NC, and Shane Derrick Cook of Davis. His memory will be cherished and kept alive through the laughter and stories of his four grandchildren, Austin, Amber, Kelsie, and Zach. Gilbert also leaves behind his sister, Odessa Jones, and her husband, Roger, who together with their sons, Donald and Daniel Matthews, and nieces, Casey Cook Byrum and Jennifer Cook Simpson, will remember him for the remarkable uncle and brother he was. Gilbert Scott Cook Jr. was the embodiment of a courageous, faith-filled, and selfless man.


He approached life with a steadfastness and a gentle strength that inspired all who knew him. His unwavering commitment to his principles, his family, and his faith left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to cross paths with him.
