Harold Grey Mozingo, Sr.

Obituary Harold Grey Mozingo, Sr., surrounded by his family, quietly passed away on June 27, 2019 after a long period of declining health. At his request, there will be no funeral. Final arrangements will be private. Harold was born in the small community of Shine Crossroads in Greene County. As a young boy he and his family moved to LaGrange and later to Kinston. He graduated from Grainger High School and is a member of the NC State Champions Hall of Fame Red Devil Football team, class of 1955. Harold has remained close to many of his classmates for the last 60 years. As a young man he served a 2-year commitment in the US National Guard Reserves. He worked at DuPont in Richmond, VA; Manager of Liberty Loans in Kinston, Manager of Woolco Department Store in Kinston and finally found his niche working for the State of NC, Department of Cultural Resources, Division of Archives & History. He began his career with the State at the Caswell Neuse Historic Site in Kinston. He accepted a position as Manager of the historic site, Allen House in Alamance County, NC which is a Revolutionary War site. He later moved to Durham, NC where he was manager at the Bennett Place, a Civil War historic site, until his retirement. Harold retired in 1996 at the young age of 57 after 31 years of working for the State of North Carolina. Upon his retirement he was honored by receiving the Order of the Longleaf Pine for his dedication and service. First and foremost in his life was his family. He maintained contact with close and distant family members as much as possible; but, the brightest lights in his life were the day he married and the birth of his son, Harold "Grey" Mozingo, Jr. After family came other interests. He loved boating, water skiing and fishing. He always said when he was fishing that most of his time was spent "practicing". But the thrill was always there. He loved the Civil War and history in general. He never stopped reading and learning. He bled Duke Blue and was always a Blue Devil basketball fan. He and his family moved to Durham in 1973 and was fortunate enough to attend some games. He enjoyed following the players as they moved on to the Pros. All of his life he loved to dance. Thats what attracted Harold and LaVerne to each other. Almost every weekend they were dancing somewhere until his declining health would not allow them to participate. You could almost always count on seeing Harold on the dance floor if the doors were open. He loved to socialize with his shagging friends and listen to the music. He was inducted into the Atlantic Beach Shaggers Hall of Fame in 2001. In February, 2019 he was awarded the "Charles Gurley Spirit of the Dance" award from the Board of Directors of Memories Beach & Shag Club. This award is given for "Never wavering from the love and support of the music and devotion to the dance and the lifestyle while facing hardship and adversity in life." In March, 2019 he was honored with a lifetime membership to the Twin Rivers Shag Club, which is the 2nd one ever given to a member. Shagging was a big part of Harolds life. He was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia Joyce Waller Mozingo of Kinston, NC; father, Robert Henry Mozingo of Snow Hill, NC; sister, Peggy Ann Mozingo Winkler Rau of Bakersfield, CA; and nephew, Martin Thomas Winkler of Ajo, AZ. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, LaVerne Page Mozingo of the home; son, Harold Grey Mozingo, Jr., of Morehead City, NC; niece, Lori Winkler Zinck her husband, Tim Zinck and family of Bristow, VA; nephew, Joseph Carl "Joe" Winkler his wife Cindy Stratton Winkler and family of Bakersfield, CA; and other nieces, nephews, cousins and aunts.
