Harriet Nelson Willis

August 30, 1951 — January 16, 2025

Gloucester

Harriet Faye Nelson Willis, of Gloucester, NC, was peacefully called to her eternal rest on January 16, 2025. She was born and raised on Front Street in Beaufort, North Carolina, where she developed a deep love for her community, family, and the simple joys of life.

Harriet was known for her boundless love of others and her incredible cooking. A kind, nurturing, and warm-hearted person, she made everyone feel special. Harriet was the one with the best ears to listen and the softest heart, never passing a harsh judgment on anyone. Speaking unkindly was simply not in her vocabulary. She had a remarkable way of making others feel heard and loved.

Harriet was the cherished daughter of Clifton & Dot Nelson and grew up surrounded by the love of her three sisters—Patty, Judy, and Terri. At the age of 12, Harriet received a wonderful surprise when her parents announced that a brother, Cliff, was on the way. From the moment he was born, Harriet made it clear that he was “her little baby.” Their bond was unbreakable, and even as a teenager, it was common to see Harriet, her date, and Cliff together. Harriet always made sure to bring one thing that Cliff loved and that was her famous made from scratch pimento cheese. To her, Cliff was “her first little boy,” and this title stayed with her proudly throughout her life. Their bond was still just as today.

Harriet married the love of her life, Allen Earl Willis. Their marriage was a true partnership, marked by love, respect, and unwavering commitment. Together, they welcomed their son, Allen Warren Willis, on May 8, 1973. Harriet often spoke of Warren’s birth as one of the greatest accomplishments of her life, and she poured her heart into raising him. Whether it was going hunting with Allen and Warren or simply being there for her family, Harriet always put them first.

During the years when Allen worked as a commercial fisherman on the Shad Boat, Harriet demonstrated incredible resilience and adventure. Without the modern conveniences of GPS or cell phones, she would often hop in the truck right by herself, leave Beaufort and head to Louisiana—no distance was too far to support her family.

Harriet’s favorite title was “Momma,” but her heart swelled with even greater pride when she became a grandmother. The birth of her granddaughter, Kimberly Ann, filled her life with love, laughter, and immeasurable joy. A few years later, a wonderful surprise arrived with the news of twins on the way. Harriet embraced the arrival of Kailey and Kristy with the same joy, and becoming “Grandma” was, without a doubt, one of the greatest accomplishments of her life.

Harriet had a special connection with her cousins, who were more like best friends. She loved to share stories about Cousin Sharon Moore Yorke, who lived in Rochester, NY, and spent many summers visiting Marshallberg. Together, they made memories that would last a lifetime, often spending time at Sleepy Creek, enjoying carefree days in their bikinis and creating cherished moments of laughter and fun.

Another cousin, Cathie, lived just a few blocks away on Marsh St, and together they were “Double Trouble.” Known for their mischief, the two shared countless laughs, secrets, and fun—especially during their younger years when they double-dated. When you ask Cathie to tell you more about Harriet she would say, “I can’t tell you everything,” but the bond they shared remained unwavering through the years.

Professionally, Harriet dedicated 28 years of her life to Huntley’s in Beaufort, where she worked as their bookkeeper from 1971 until the business closed in 1999. She loved her customers and cherished the relationships she built within the community. Harriet was also a proud Notary Public, a title that held great meaning for her.

After Huntley’s closed, Harriet transitioned to a career as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), working as a restorative nurse at Snug Harbor and Pruitt. Helping others was second nature to Harriet, and she spent her life caring for others with the same love and compassion that defined her personal life. Harriet often said she never truly worked a day in her life because she loved everything she did.

Harriet is survived by her son, Warren Willis of Gloucester; three granddaughters, Kimberly, Kailey, and Kristy Willis of Harkers Island; several nieces and nephews; two sisters, Patty (Lester) McKeel of Beaufort, Terri Vincent of Beaufort; brother, Cliff (Shannon) Nelson of Newport; she also leaves behind her special “fur baby” Gunner.

Harriet is preceded by her parents, Clifton, Sr. and Carrie Nelson; her loving husband Allen Willis; daughter Kimberly D. Willis; sister, Judy Nelson.

Harriet’s life was one of love, kindness, and devotion. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and everyone who was touched by her warmth and selflessness. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew her.

Harriet’s memory will continue to inspire those who knew her, and her spirit will forever remain a guiding light in the lives of her family and all who loved her.
