Harry Alton Hill

August 11, 1944 — September 17, 2023

Obituary Harry "Alton" Hill, 79, of Beaufort, NC, passed away on September 17, 2023, surrounded by loved ones, after a courageous battle with Alzheimers disease. Alton was born August 11, 1944, in Beaufort, NC, to Harry Hill and Pauline Hill. Alton loved his pets, his beloved dogs Lottie, Daisy Joy, Bogi, and Mirabelle. They were his constant companions and brought lots of joy to his life, and they are now wagging their tails as he joins them again. Alton was fortunate to have the friends he had throughout his life, from sharing the love of basketball, kayaking, and biking there was never a dull moment when they got together. After graduating from Beaufort High School, he went on to graduate from Atlantic Christian (Barton) College and proceeded to have a long teaching and coaching career that spanned from Virginia Beach, VA, and back to Carteret County. While he was at Atlantic Christian on a basketball scholarship, he also ran track and field and, at one time, held the school records in several events, including the 220 hurdles, 330 hurdles, 440 hurdles, 880 hurdles, 440 relay and the mile relay, with a school record of 2:02.2 in the 880 that stands to this day. In 1967, during the Carolina Conference Championship at Appalachian State, he won both the 440 and 880 titles. After he finished the second race, he collapsed, puked, and said, "I love it!" Alton will always be remembered as a hometown hero for his 91 straight wins, 3 state championships for the Beaufort Sea Dogs in 1959, 1960, and 1961, and his hall of fame accolades from Atlantic Christian for both basketball and track and field. Alton is survived by his wife of 20 years, Debra Hill, son Austin Hill of Jacksonville, FL, granddaughter Amelia Hill, daughter Ashleigh Hill Bove and husband Jim of Washington, DC, grandchildren Quinn and Guy, his half-sister Donna Willis Bennett of Morehead City, half-brother Donnie Willis of Beaufort, NC, stepdaughters Jodi Allen of Beaufort and Rudi Shelor of Morehead City, step granddaughters Olivia and Lilly, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his father, Harry Hill, his mother, Pauline Willis, and sisters, Paula Williams, Harriet Dennis Weeks. A celebration of life will take place at a later date.
