Horace Leigh Clayton

April 18, 1931 — June 27, 2024

Horace Leigh Clayton, known affectionately as Leigh to his friends and family, 93, of Gloucester passed away on Thursday, June 27, 2024 at Carteret Health Care.

Born on April 18, 1931, in Toms River, New Jersey, Leigh's life was a testament to his resilience, hard work, and the deep love he had for his family and the sea.

Leigh attended Toms River High School. After graduation, he proudly served four years in the United States Navy. Following his service, Leigh embarked on a successful career as a sales representative with Johnson Motors and later pursued his passion for the sea as a commercial fisherman.

Leigh was known for his love of fishing, a hobby that kept him on the waters he cherished. His knack for tinkering with anything he could get his hands on also kept him joyously occupied during his retirement years.

Described by those who knew him as an exceptional fisherman, Leigh was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his daughters, Jackie Pond (Jon) of Florida, Karen Russo of SC and Donna Srebro (Paul) of Pennsylvania; his grandchildren; Cara Conley, Kristina Harrison, Madison Pond, Cliff Capuano, Christin Capuano, Brenton Russo and Amanda McKie;13 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Dorothy Kitchin of Maryland.

Leigh was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 41 years, Fay Clayton, and daughter, Cathy Sunday.

A special thanks to Charles (Beaver) Styron for his kindness as a caregiver to Leigh which allowed Leigh to remain in his home as he wished until his passing. Thank you also to the staff at Carteret Health Care in Morehead City, NC.

Leigh's legacy is one of love, perseverance, and the joy he found in the simple pleasures of life. He was a man who valued personal connections and could always be counted on for a story, a laugh, or a quiet moment of reflection. His absence will be profoundly felt by all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Leigh Clayton's life was a testament to his resilience, hard work, and the deep love for his family and the sea. His legacy will live on in the hearts of his family and all who knew him.
