Howard Garner

Obituary Howard Garner, 83, of Newport, passed away on Friday, November 23, 2018 at home. Howard, or as most knew him, "Mean and Ornery", was born to Fernie and Mildred Garner at their home next to the Hill Hardware Store on January 12, 1935. He has lived at his current home on Nine Foot Road since 1963. He had a long career as a Soil Conservation Technician serving Carteret, Craven, Pamlico and Onslow Counties. Some of the achievements during his life he was most proud of are: President of Newport Woodmen of the World, Charter President of Newport Jaycees, Governor of Newport Moose Lodge, Vice President of NC Jaycees, Board of Directors of US Jaycees, Honorary Jr Chamber International, Pilgrim Degree with Moose and served as Administrator of Newport Moose Lodge for 18 years during which time the lodge was named #1 out of 2200 lodges by Moose International. A funeral service will be held at 5:00 PM on Tuesday, November 27, 2018 at Faith Evangelical Bible Church in Newport with Pastor Norm Waligora and NC Senator Norman Sanderson officiating. The family will receive friends the hour prior to the service. A private entombment will take place at a later date at Amariah Garner Memorial Cemetery. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Peggy Garner; daughter, Beth Tufts and her husband; son, Ward Garner; grandchildren, Dawn McCabe; Dani Schwager; Johnathan Tufts; Sarah Garner; Easton Garner; special great granddaughter, Catherine McCabe; and sister, Brenda Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Tom Garner; Gherman Garner; and sister, Joyce Lewis.
