James Bryant Jr.

July 12, 1949 — August 15, 2024

Beaufort

James E. Bryant, 75, of Beaufort, passed away on Thursday, August 15, 2024, at the Crystal Coast Hospice House of Newport.

Mr. James Ervin Bryant Jr or ‘Pookie Nanny’ as many knew him, was a Carteret County native, he was born on July 12th, 1949, to the late James Irvine Bryant Sr, and Mrs. Magalene James Bryant. James transitioned peacefully into the arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, August 15th, 2024.

James grew up in the community of Beaufort NC and was educated in the Carteret County School system attending Queen St. high school, and East Carteret high school he was known by his peers and classmates of the class of 1967 as (Lion and Lamb) quiet and reserved. It was your decision, which side you got they would say. He did not bother anyone, but if you bothered him or his family you would get the Lion. James worked various jobs during his lifetime: the Atlantic veneer, odd jobs with the county, and different fish houses, receiving his retirement credits from Homers fisheries. James favorite work memory was the opportunity he experienced collaborating with his father years ago at the Pepsi cola company.

Throughout the town of Beaufort James Jr was known as a realist and a man who said what he meant and meant what he said (communicating with transparency and authenticity, rather than concealing or misleading saying what was on his mind without pretense). The senior citizens throughout our neighborhood and his friends who have known him all his life, shared their personal stories and all will remember James Jr for his kindness and willingness to help them.

James always said he loved God and wears a tattoo on his arm that read (IN GOD I LIVE) Romans 14:8. James loved cooking, gardening, (growing vegetables and flowers) for his mother and was a very good artist. He was a member of PURVIS CHAPEL AME ZION CHURCH BEAUFORT N.C. where he remained a member until his death. James was a certified Bible study teacher for the state of North Carolina for many years and would say I know the truth so not just anyone can tell me about the Bible. He was taught by many leaders. James got to know and like his Pastor, Reverend Thomas Fryar who he reverenced as a good man, strong with the word of God and its truth; many times, James would say, I like the way he treats my mother (Pastoral care). THANK YOU, PASTOR THOMAS FRYAR.

James leaves to cherish his memories, his mother Mrs. Magalene Bryant of the home. James is survived by his oldest daughter Ms. Aretha Turlington, Dalton GA. (who he called his princess), his oldest son Mr. Lorne Quinn Knight, (Alethea) Washington D.C., his baby boy, Mr. Jason Bryant, Atlanta GA., his daughter and son through love Mrs. Michelle Brown Jackson (Marshall) and Mr. James Brown both of Jacksonville, FL. Fifteen grandchildren, and twenty-three great grandchildren. Sisters: Ms. Christine Bryant Beaufort, Mrs. Maggie Bryant Mathewson (Oscar Sr.) Fayetteville, N.C. Ms. Magalene Bryant Beaufort, N.C, Terry Bryant Manuel (Bishop Raynard Manuel Jr) Morehead City N.C. Mrs. Debbie Bryant Hunt (Phillip Sr.) Havelock N.C. forty-eight nieces, and nephews, special cousin Jeannie Sharon Ellison, Beaufort N.C. Proceeded in death by his daughter Melissa Edwards, father James E. Bryant Sr., sister Anne Bryant Anderson, brothers, David and Joseph Bryant, nephew Angus Bryant Sr.

In James final days as his soul laid before our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and God beckoned him come, James’s response was “I Surrender All.” We thank God for the seventy-five years he had with us, James was beloved by his mother and will be greatly missed by his family
