James Edward Pettiway

Obituary James "Poncho" Pettiway, of Tampa, FL, formerly of Beaufort, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 11, 2021. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, July 25, 2021 at Bridgeway Church in Beaufort. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 2:00 to 3:00 pm at the church. He will be interred at Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery. He was preceded in death by his wife, Claudia Robinson and his oldest brother John. He was the 2nd oldest of seven children. James was member of the local Tampa chapter of the Masonic lodge where he diligently served for a number of years. James was born on September 11, 1952 to the late Beatrice and John Pettiway. He joined the church at an early age and was educated in the Carteret County School System. He worked as a commercial fisherman until his health prevented him. James later moved to Tampa, Florida to be with family. He was a kind, loving and generous person and will be missed by the people who loved him. James will be remembered by his favorite saying, "Hold it down now" whenever he would come to the end of a telephone conversation. He is survived by his sons, James Bernard Pettiway of Havelock and Vincent Lee Pettiway (Ghaka Lewis) of ATL, Georgia; six grandchildren, Prestige Pettiway, Lenique Simmons Bailey, Porshylia George, Keionna Garrison, Karina Carter, and Ishajaquan Thomas; nine great grandchildren, Gabriel Bailey, Candance Bailey, Yuliona Carter, Kaloni Garrison, Malaya Garrison, Lamih Thomas, Riley Thomas, Zoey Pettiway, Lilah Grant; sisters, Joyce Murrell (Levi), Mary Johnson (Willie), Mary Windley, Catherine Collins (Charlie), Yvonne Pettiway; brother, Kenny Pettiway; and aunt, Shirley Segar and a host of extended family and friends.
