Julian was born April 24, 1925, to Elmer & Charlotte Lupton of Roe, North Carolina. A proud veteran of WWII, Julian served in the United States Navy and the United States Coast Guard. He was extremely proud to be a Veteran. Julian entered the service in August of 1943 and reported to Boot Camp at the United States Naval Training Station Bainbridge in Port Deposit, Maryland. After Boot Camp and initial training, he was transferred to Naval Station Norfolk Virginia until assigned to the USS UHLMANN DD 687, a Fletcher Class Destroyer. While onboard the USS UHLMANN, Julian would travel and fight throughout the Pacific to include places like Okinawa, Taiwan, and the retaking of the Philippines. During his time in service, he would earn the following awards: American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with 7 stars, and the Philippine Liberation Medal with 2 stars. Julian was released from the Navy in January of 1946 and awarded an Honorable Discharge. After returning home from the Navy he married the love of his life Alma, and they built their family home. They had one daughter, Janie Lorraine.
In June of 1946 Julian enlisted in the United States Coast Guard in District 5 also known as the “Long Blue Line,” after which he was assigned to the Cape Lookout Coast Guard Station on Core Banks between Cape Lookout and the Cape Lookout Light. He served there from June 1946 until April 1952 and earned the rank of Boatswains Mate Third Class. He then was assigned to Fort Macon Coast Guard Station where he served until September of 1952 when he received his second Honorable Discharge.
In addition to his military service Julian worked at Cherry Point, Driftwood Enterprises and G & R Grocery. Julian will be lovingly remembered as a devoted Christian, husband, a wonderful father, “Pop,” and “Uncle Julian” to almost everyone on the Island. He was a quiet and humble man, who was dedicated to his Church, his family, and his community. His legacy of kindness, love, honesty, whether you wanted it or not, and dry wit will continue to inspire all who knew him.
