Obituary Katherine "Kay" Salter, 79, of Beaufort passed away Sunday, March 4, 2018 at her home. Among her MANY talents- Kay was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She was also quite a seamstress, masterful quilter-who made hundreds of quilts for others. The proceeds from the quilts she sold went to the Core Sound Decoy Guild and to benefit orphans in Romania. Her favorite quilts were the ones she created using someones favorite garments to express their life through the beauty and creativity of that quilts design. She was also a licensed pilot, equestrienne, author of an eight-volume series of historical fiction set in the 1940s of Beaufort titled "Barefoot in Beaufort." A yard-sale-route organizer, artist, educator (of 36 years-Beaufort Elementary) and a friend to many. She was a lifelong member of St. Pauls Episcopal Church as well as a Sunday school teacher and choir member for many years. Some memories from the grandchildren: (Sarah): along with the qualities listed-she was a lover of all things Beaufortand best of ALL, My "Din Dan." Thirty precious years we had together. Its never enough. Love you forever and ever. Cant wait to see you again. Life wont be the same here but we will all move on and work hard to thrive and succeed in your honor. "Pooky" (Joshua): Today I lost one of the best friends Ive ever had and one of the best persons Ive ever known. My grandmother was a cornerstone in my life. She was a fierce woman with a humble heart that had an unending desire to make the world a better place. She was my teacher and mentor. She "beat" into me morals and ethics. She taught me to not see the value of a person in the color of their skin, how much money they have or the way they look. She continually showed me that in any given situation you can find a way to help someone, regardless of what it costs you. She created in me a love for nature and a love for life and to cherish it dearly. She believed in investing into kids and building the next generation. She had a very special heart for ALL communities and always spoke up for the disadvantaged. My grandmother fought tooth n nail to make sure children had a safe place to go for their education. She believed in leading by example, and putting your "money where your mouth is." Im going to miss her dearly, but I know shes finally at peace now in the arms of Jesus. I hope that I can be half the man she raised me to be. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, April 28, 2018 at St. Pauls Episcopal Church of Beaufort with Father Michael Singer and Chaplain Jim Marshburn officiating. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. She is survived by her husband, Jimmy Salter of Beaufort; son, John Porter Betts of Atlanta, GA; three daughters, Amy Betts Noe and husband, Mike of Alaska; Elaina Wilde of Gloucester; Tina Salter of Williston; three grandchildren, Joshua Noe of CA; Sarah Rude of Thousand Oaks, CA; Laney Salter of Williston; brother, Herbert Prytherch Jr. of Beaufort.
