Lummie Dean Murray, Sr., 61, of Houston, Texas, passed away on Friday, August 18, 2017. Lummie was born to Bennie Murray (deceased) and Gertrude Murray on June 23, 1956, in Beaufort, NC. Lummie grew up on Craven Street and absolutely loved Beaufort. He was baptized at an early age at Mount Tabor Missionary Baptist Church. After graduating from East Carteret High School in 1975, he joined the U. S. Coast Guard, and was stationed in Houston, TX. After serving a tour in the U.S. Coast Guard, he made Houston his home for the past 40 years. A Funeral Service in Houston, TX will take place at 11:00am on Friday, September 8, 2017 at Walls Chapel A.M.E. Zion. Viewing will be from 9:00am 11:00am. A Homegoing Celebration will take place at 2:00pm on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at Bridgeway Church in Beaufort, NC with Reverend Brian Kelsey officiating and Reverend Annie Lou Henry, Eulogist. Burial will follow at Ocean View Cemetery in Beaufort. Those remaining to cherish his memory are his loving mother, Gertrude Murray, of Beaufort, NC; two Godmothers, Nora & Vivian Madden, of Beaufort, NC; his devoted wife, Sheila Jackson Murray, of Los Angeles, CA; one daughter, LaDenna Donnetta Murray, of Houston, TX: one son, Lummie Dean Murray Jr., of Houston, TX; three grandchildren, Nyeshia Melody Jackson, U.S. Army; Matthew Joseph Lastrapes; Mia JaNae Samatha Lastrapes, of Houston, TX; one aunt, Lillie Mae Murrell of Beaufort, NC; five brothers, Sylvester Murray (Helen) of Newport, NC; Ronald Murray (Teresa), of Charlotte, NC; Tracy Murray (Ethel) of Beaufort NC; Vincent Murray (Cynthia) of Murietta, CA; Ronald Phillips, of New Bern, NC; brother, James Russell Murray (who passed away on September 3, 2017); nine sisters, Elizabeth George, of Beaufort, NC; Rosetta Murrell (Winston), of Beaufort, NC; Virginia Moore (Arthur) of Scotland, GA; Arnetta White (Derek), of Morehead City, NC; Angela Murray of Beaufort, NC; Dorothy Robertson (Joe), of Newark, NJ; Sadie Johnson (James), of Beaufort, NC; Janice Murray, of Newark, NJ; Rosa Lee Simmons (Reuben), of Beaufort, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by two children, Damon Jackson and Legena Arnetta Murray; and brother-in-law Willie George.
