Matthew 'Mat' Morton Farmer

May 3, 1980 — March 15, 2018

Obituary Matthew Morton Farmer, age 37, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Newport, NC on Thursday, March 15, 2018. He was a native of Wilson, NC and a graduate of Beddingfield High School. Matthew loved learning, whether it was violin, astronomy, or oceanography. He had a phenomenal memory, especially for numbers. Matthew loved to read everything from classics to science fiction. He could put together a jigsaw puzzle amazingly fast and sketch whatever he saw effortlessly. Matthew truly cared for people, going out of his way to help children and the elderly in particular. Family was very important to him, but he enjoyed keeping up with his many friends as well. Friends and family will remember Matthew for the profound love he had for his daughter, his gift of gab, his wicked roller skating moves, those wonderful guitar riffs, his love of the NY Giants, and for a heart that will leave ours forever broken. Services will be held graveside at Maplewood Cemetery in Wilson, NC Saturday March 24 at 2:00. All welcome. Matthew is survived by his daughter, Aspen Farmer of Morehead City, NC; his mother and step-father, Elizabeth G. and William Joseph Wilburn, of Wake Forest, NC; his father and step-mother, John and Sharon Farmer of Asheville, NC; his sister, Sarah Farmer of Chapel Hill, NC; step-sisters, Mamie Colburn and husband Kevin of Asheville, NC; Ellen Wilburn of Winston-Salem, NC; step-brothers, Eric Smith and wife Kay, of Charlotte, NC; Adam Smith and wife Sarah Gilliam of Asheville, NC; and David Wilburn of Winston-Salem, NC.
