Obituary Matthew "Matt" Anthony Hernandez, 27, of Newport passed away Friday, July 6, 2018 at his home. Matthew was a kind-hearted soul who had several passions in life that included surfing, riding dirt bikes, music, shoes and fast cars. Anyone who had the pleasure of meeting him could describe him in one phrase, "easy-going." As a very handsome and energetic young man, Matthew never had a shortage of friends by his side. Many can account for him teaching them how to surf and "to always go for that wave no matter what." He had a great way of encouraging his friends to always be their best and never let fear get in their way. Matthew could always light up a room with his smile and infectious laugh. There were not many times that he wasnt making someone laugh or planning a prank. He had a wonderful relationship with many family members, especially his mother. As an only child for most of his young life, he grew to have a very strong bond with her that no one could break. Family was a big part of Matthews life, whether that be by blood or not. Growing up, his house would always be full of his "brothers" and "sisters" and lots of fun-loving chaos. For the last 10 years, his newest buddy was Tucker his beloved black lab. He became a great companion to Matthew and meant the world to him. We like to believe Tucker thought the same. Matt was a member of One Harbor Church of Morehead City. A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday at One Harbor Church of Morehead City. He is survived by his mother, Maureen Fahy Hernandez of Newport; father, Anthony Hernandez of Emerald Isle; step father, Ray Harper of Newport; sister, Hailey Hernandez of Newport; paternal grandfather, Martin Hernandez of Havelock; maternal grandmother, Geri Thibodeau of Biddeford, ME; his beloved dog, Tucker; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, William and Kathrine Fahy and his paternal grandmother, Pearl Hernandez.
