Preston Edward (Eddie) Lewis, 71, of Garner, formerly of Beaufort, NC, left us on January 30, 2025, after a lengthy and courageous battle with colon cancer and declining health, at SECU Hospice House of Johnson Health, Smithfield, NC.
There will be a graveside service at 1:00 PM, on Saturday, February 8, 2025 at Oceanview Cemetery in Beaufort.
Eddie, known as ‘Fur’ to many of his friends and family, lived and worked in Beaufort his entire life. He graduated from East Carteret HS in 1971 and became a skilled carpenter. Upon retirement he relocated to Garner, NC, to live with his son Brandon and wife Heather. Eddie was a kind, fun-loving man who loved his family above all else. He enjoyed fishing, especially at the Haystacks, and he was an avid sports fan, especially of the NFL’s NY Jets and NC State Football and Basketball.
Eddie was preceded by his parents, Preston and Bessie Lewis of Beaufort. He is survived by his son, Brandon Lewis and wife, Heather, of Garner, his grandson Brandon, Jr. and wife, Alexis, of Marshallberg, and great granddaughter Sophia Katherine (the “apple of his eye”). He is also survived by a brother, Neal Lewis (Helen), of Wilmington, niece Jessica Lewis, of Charleston, SC, step-niece Alexis Trask, step-nephew William Trask, Jr. (Ansley) and families of Wilmington. Eddie is also survived by many cousins and friends in the Beaufort area and elsewhere. He also leaves behind his buddies Sugar Bear and Boogie.

Crossing the Bar
Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar.
When I put out to sea.
But such a tide as moving seems asleep
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.
Twilight and evening bell,
And after the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark.
For though from out our borne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crossed the bar.
