Robert 'Carl' Ballance

Obituary Robert "Carl" Ballance, 62, of Mill Creek, went home to Heaven to join family and friends on Tuesday, January 15, 2019. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, January 18, 2019 at Reece's Chapel Baptist Church with Rev. James 'Winkie' Chadwick officiating. Burial will follow in the Lilly Family Cemetery. Carl, as all knew him best, was born on December 8, 1956 at Carteret General Hospital in Morehead City. The oldest son of Haywood Walter "Wally" and Arminta "Ment" Lilly Ballance. He grew up with a houseful of sisters (his first best friends)! But, he had plenty of boys to grow up with on the Creek! His lifelong occupation was as a commercial fisherman. That being the casethere were many times he also picked up a hammer and worked in construction while the waters were closed for oystering and clamming. He met his wife, Tilly, through his sisters and cousin Jessie Kay after Tillys papaw, Shannon Hall, met, fell in love with, and married Carls aunt Erma. (Carteret County is ONLY SO BIG!) Carl and Tilly began their life together on October 1, 1978 and later married on September 11, 1982. Soon after marriage, the family was complete when Sherry Kay was born on May 19, 1984. A great addition for big sister Jackie Lynn. Carl remained with Tilly until her death on May 1, 2015. After that, his life became all about his family, friends, the waters of Carteret County; and especially being granddaddy to Bobby Ray and JJ. Carl is survived by his mother, Arminta Lilly "Ment" Ballance of Mill Creek; daughter, Jackie Lynn Schmidt Setliff; and grandson, Bobby Ray Hall Setliff both of the home; daughter, Sherry Kay Ballance and her fianc, Jeff Barbour; their son and Carls mini-me grandson, Jaylen Landon Barbour all of Salty Shores; sisters, Cecilia Ballance Boyette of Mill Creek; Darlene Ballance Haney of High Point; Doreen Ballance Oglesby of Mill Creek; Debbie Ballance of New Bern; Tammy Pasela of Ohio; Crystal Ballance of Mill Creek; and Marlena Price of Florida; parents-in-law, Wilbur and Elena Hall of Otway; Tillys brothers, sisters and their families; aunt, Margaret Lilly Dixon of Mill Creek; uncle, Sammy Lilly of Fayetteville; aunt Doris Ballance Sanders of Charlotte; and many nieces; nephews; and friends who loved him and whom he loved. He was preceded in death by his wife, Tilly Hall Ballance; father, Haywood Walter "Wally" Ballance; son, Chris Culpepper; granddaughter, Aralynn Kay Setliff; and best friend and cousin, Peck Lilly. A visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Thursday, January 17, 2019 at Reece's Chapel Baptist Church in Mill Creek.
