Roderick Leslie Gillikin Sr., 73, of Otway, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, April 25.
Blind at the age of 12, due to a hunting accident, he attended the NC School of the Blind. He worked at the ice cream window of his parent’s grocery store in Otway. His great love was drumming. He was a talented musician, also playing the guitar and piano.
He was proud of his sons and his grandchildren. When asked what he would most like to see if he could, he replied without hesitation, his grandchildren. Roderick was thankful for his sobriety and giving his heart to Jesus. He attended Island Road Baptist Church until his health diminished. His dedicated pastor, Charles Tyler, continued his ministry faithfully and was Roderick’s best friend.
Roderick is survived by his sons, Roderick Gillikin Jr and wife Talisha, of Gloucester, and son, Vernon Gillikin, of Otway, and grandchildren Cadence, Caroline, James “Riley,” Caliana, Charlotte, and Roderick “Kalel,” and his sister, Thressa Taylor, of Otway, and nephew, Christopher Taylor, of Otway.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Mary Gillikin.
His family will celebrate his life privately.
