Salvatore "Sal" Gambino, 76, of Havelock, NC passed away Sunday, April 16, 2017 at Carolina East Medical Center in New Bern. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, April 25, 2017 at Annunciation Catholic Church in Havelock with Rev. William Upah officiating. The family welcomes you to join them in fellowship and refreshments following the Mass. Sal retired from MCAS Cherry Point after 25 years as an Aircraft Mechanic and was a member of Annunciation Catholic Parish. Sal was born in Ciminna, Sicily, Italy on July 8, 1940. He traveled to New York in December of 1949 at the age of 9 with his mother and sister, Emilia. He met his wife, Rita, working for Barricini Candies and they married on September 24th, 1966. They moved to Havelock, NC in 1974 with their son, Joey. They ultimately made their home on Elizabeth Street where they have spent many happy years. Sal was a tenderhearted person who loved his friends and family, especially spending time with his grandchildren, brothers and sisters, and nieces and nephews. He found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was a creative person who enjoyed working with wood and making crafts. In his leisure time, he was entertained by the music of Mario Lanza and watching old movies. He savored cooking for himself and others. Sal will be missed by many. Sal is survived by his wife of 50 years, Rita (Coogan) Gambino; son, Joseph "Joey" and wife Virginia "Ginny" Gambino of Bartlett, TN; grandchildren, Joseph and Angela Gambino of Acworth, GA; sisters, Angelina Iraci of Ciminna, Sicily, Italy; Francesca LoPinto of Freehold, NJ; and brother, Michael "Mike" Gambino of Staten Island, NY. Sal was preceded in death by his parents, Giuseppe and Santa (Masi) Gambino; siblings, Pedro Gambino; Emilia Cancellieri; Domenico Gambino; Santa Pollaci and Giuseppe Gambino.
