Shelby Willis Jr.

Obituary Shelby Willis, Jr, 65, of Straits, passed away on Wednesday, February 13, 2019, at his home surrounded by family. Shelby retired in March 2012 from Cherry Point, with the position of tool and die maker. He began his career there in 1981. He enjoyed working in many departments of the facility, with the majority of his time in the Machine Shop. After retirement, Shelby could be found cutting crab pot tree blanks, helping at Edgewater Gardens, or mowing grass. In his free time, Shelby enjoyed serving with the Mens Club of Williston United Methodist Church. If a meal needed to be prepared, Shelby was the man at the grill. He spent many Saturday mornings cooking breakfast for the Mens Club. His favorite pastime was spending days at the grill cooking fish, chicken or barbeque for worthy fundraisers. Shelby is survived by his companion, Julie West; sons, Blair Willis and wife Kari of Beaufort; Matthew Willis and wife Desiree of New Bern; special children, Darby and Kelby West of the home; grandchildren, Maddox, Vivian, Mavrhen and Nova; Brother Carl "Lynwood" Willis and wife Suzanne of Columbia; niece and nephews, Gene, Dwayne, Mark, Brett, Ryan, Dierdra, and Barney. He was preceded in death by his father, Shelby Willis, Sr; mother, Ethel Gillikin; step-father, Charlie Gillikin; brothers, Dennis Hancock, David Charles Willis and a very special uncle William Riley Willis. Family and Friends are invited to attend the visitation at the Williston United Methodist Church on Friday, February 15 from 6-8pm. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the church on Saturday, February 16th at 2pm. Interment will follow at the Ocean View Cemetery in Beaufort.
